SKILLS

With over 30 years teaching experience on four continents, I am a passionate international educator with a love of learning and exploring how we might reimagine schools to become communities where learner agency is at the heart of the curriculum. I also enjoy professional collaboration and believe in its power to transform practices in schools. Through these pursuits I have developed skills that enable me to work effectively in a variety of settings.

communicator

Whether facilitating a workshop, posting updates on a class blog or writing an article, I am able to communicate ideas effectively, adapting my style to best suit the purpose and audience.

To learn more about my communication style, please view the following samples:

  • Student-led Learning Reviews, an article originally published on my blog and then republished on the IB's blog, Sharing PYP Practice.

  • Assessment in the PYP, a video produced for parents who were unable to attend our curriculum information evening

  • Action Research Project, an academic paper describing a small research project undertaken as a part of a university course.

collaborative

Learning is a social endeavour and thus the ability to collaborate is a critical skill. In developing curriculum, exploring best practice in education and building consensus, I am able to work collaboratively with various groups to achieve goals.

The following documents have been created through collaborative work:

  • Our PYP Exhibition, a booklet created to promote and celebrate a significant event in our school, based on the collaboration and reflections of colleagues and students.

  • Learning in a Digital World, an article written collaboratively with students

caring

Ultimately, the raison d'être of our education system is to empower students to become life long learners, who are capable and confident regardless of the challenges they will face. I care deeply about the needs of my students and how to best meet their individual needs.

Technology has enhanced my ability to design individualised lessons and analyse how to best support students in their learning. Below are some samples of these tools:

  • Geometry Math Menu, ï»¿students self select engagements to enhance and support their mathematical understanding as an integral part of our in-class investigations

  • Online Exit Slip, collecting data about students' learning  in an ongoing manner to inform planning and teaching

connected

Finally, effective teaching and learning in the 21st century cannot take place without continuing to stay abreast of digital technologies that are available to us. One of the most efficient ways to accomplish this is by developing a professional learning network ~ being and staying connected.

The following are examples of some of the ways I connect with other educators:

  • PYP Workshop Leader Group, an example of a post thanking my PLN for Skyping in as experts to help facilitate personalised learning during a part of a PYP workshop. I belong to several such groups on various social media.

  • Twitter, having been a part of the group that established the #pypchat on Twitter, I have since had the privilege of connecting with hundreds of educators on this network and it continues to be a great professional resource.
